Eco-conscious moms now have a place to shop for organic clothing with an edge for themselves and their hubbies. KiL Apparel is a New York City based startup clothing company that collaborates with emerging local artists to create limited edition, eco-friendly clothing.
Daniel Husserl, the Co-Founder of KiL Apparel, spent the past 9 years of his career as a sustainability strategy consultant. While in the trenches, Daniel realized that "while we focus on energy, water and waste impacts, there is rarely mention of the impacts clothing has on people and our planet."
So he began to dig, and he quickly discovered how dire the situations really is. Daniel explains one what inspired him to create KiL: "Each year we produce about 109.5 trillion t-shirts worth of cotton globally, yet only 0.03% of that is organic." That means that the other 99.7% of cotton production uses toxic pesticides that are deadly to people and slowly destroy our ecosystem.
KiL stands for Keep it Local, a concept that rings true with both foodies and eco-consumers alike. Having lived in NYC since 2005, Daniel noticed another trend that bothered him: "Living in NYC, you naturally come across a number of insanely talented local artists who can't make a living doing what they love." So, this Eco-Consultant turned Social Entrepreneur quit his job and created a business that he hopes "will one day drastically increase the amount of organic cotton being produced, while supporting talented local artists in our communities."
